Much is being made, right now, about Internet Explorer’s much hyped stealth technology
that will allow online surfers to anonymize their online trail thereby
concealing the audit trail of the sites they have visited.
Microsoft has called this the next step in online privacy but the
reality of it is, as usual, a lot less than the hype. The new IE (which
is currently in beta testing) is still steps behind its rival Firefox browser
which has had these settings for some time now. As usual, what MS are
doing differently is giving prominence to the feature so that it
becomes easier for surfers to use and, as a result, will be used more
frequently.

Back in the day SEO work was easy. You built a site putting together a
few rectangles and a square or two. Dropped in some text, a picture and
a twinkling star background that made Van Gogh’s Starry Night look
positively restrained and you published it on the web.
You made sure the meta tags were ok and, after you notified the search
engines, you expected to see your site pretty much near the top, based
on your content, because, let’s face it, the number of websites in
those days were like more than 10 and less than 100.
This is pretty much what happens (in a slightly modified way) these
days. So, I can almost here you ask, “why is SEO so complicated then?”
well it’s complicated because, today this is what happens when you put

If you are reading this right now relax. This is August, the month
when, in many parts of the world, those who can head for the beaches
and those who can’t lose the will to live let alone surf the web as
they wonder why exactly are they not yet able to go on holiday?

It is a sign of our times and the maturity of the web that while the
web works globally and search engines can serve up your website
anywhere in the world the real power lies in their ability to serve
things up locally.
Looking for a pizza restaurant in a specific area of Manchester, UK,
for instance is not going to benefit you very much if what comes up in
your searches are pizza restaurants in Manchester, New England. This is
exactly why the optimisation of your website plays a vital part in your
ability to show up in your area and increase your prospects’ ability to
find you when they look.
